Lesotho Television, a State television broadcaster run under the Lesotho National Broadcasting Service, was allowed to broadcast brief coverage, for the first time, of a High Court case.

Justice T’seliso Monaphathi permitted the television cameraman to take shots just minutes before he presided over a fraud case involving Lesotho’s former Minister of Finance Timothy Thahane. He is accused of defrauding the Government of Lesotho of over M18 million (equivalent of over R18 million) for an unauthorised vegetable farm in his home area.

This development gives hope to the media in that according to the High Court Act 1978 the judge has the power to order everyone to clear the court if he finds it fit. In the history of court proceedings in Lesotho television has never before been allowed to cover court proceedings.
